Mongstad-Lindås cable transmission 2014-2015

During 2014 and 2015 Unitech Power Systems performed analyses of switching transients in the new grid connection between Kollsnes and Lindås in Norway.

The Lindås-Kollsnes connection is part of the new Mongstad-Kollsnes connection. The connection strengthens the power supply to the industrial plants at Kollsnes and Mongstad. The new connection has been commissioned recently. For more information, see BKK sine nettsider (in Norwegian).

The new grid connection includes a record long PEX cable connection at the 420-kV voltage level. The long cables at this voltage level generate large amounts of reactiv power that have to be compensated by reactors. The combination of long 420-kV sea cables, reactors and overhead lines gives a complex oscillating circuit and it is critical to make sure that switching transients do not lead to unacceptable stress in the system.

Unitech Power Systems have performed analyses of switching transients in the new grid connection to ensure acceptable stresses on system components.
